About this camp

The SMU Lyle School of Engineering's Advanced Engineering camp offers rising 9th and 10th graders an immersive, hands-on introduction to various engineering disciplines. Participants engage in interactive team projects that mirror the engineering design process, fostering a deeper understanding of core STEM concepts. Activities introduce general processes and topics in electrical, mechanical, civil and environmental, and computer science. Students gain practical experience in the Deason Innovation Gym (DIG), a dedicated maker space equipped with 3D-printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, and power tools. This environment allows campers to prototype solutions to real-world challenges, developing both analytical and presentation skills. The curriculum, designed by Caruth Institute for Engineering Education faculty and staff, is supported by SMU Lyle Engineering students and DFW college Science & Engineering students who serve as mentors. Through these projects, campers explore college readiness for STEM disciplines and cultivate an interest in engineering careers.

What a typical day looks like

The camp runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, including curriculum and projects, with all project materials provided. Lunches and snacks are included, and SMU Lyle Engineering students and DFW college Science & Engineering students provide class support and serve as mentors.
