About this camp

The UT Dallas Summer Biology Research Workshop (SBRW) is a 4-week, in-person program designed for high school students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. Participants engage in hands-on research within the Department of Biological Sciences laboratories at UT Dallas, working on cutting-edge biology projects under the mentorship of faculty and graduate students. The program begins with a week of intensive hands-on training in molecular and modern biology techniques, including bacterial transformation, plasmid prep, gel electrophoresis, ELISA, and immunofluorescence assays. Students also gain exposure to computational biology tools like BLAST for DNA and protein sequence analysis. For the subsequent three weeks, students are matched with a research project based on their interests, collaborating with peers and mentors on discovery-based research. The workshop culminates in a research presentation at the Summer Departmental Research Symposium, allowing students to showcase their findings and gain valuable experience in scientific communication. This immersive experience aims to enhance academic skills, foster critical thinking, collaboration, and inspire a passion for scientific discovery and potential careers in biology and medicine.
