About this camp

The UT Dallas Summer Biology Research Workshop (SBRW) is a four-week intensive, hands-on research experience designed for high school students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. Participants engage in cutting-edge research projects within the laboratories of the Department of Biological Sciences at UT Dallas. The program begins with a week of hands-on training in essential molecular and modern biology techniques, led by UTD teaching faculty and graduate students. This foundational training covers skills such as microscopy, staining techniques (hematoxylin and eosin, Gram staining), bacterial transformation, plasmid preparation, gel electrophoresis, ELISA, and immunofluorescence assays. Students also gain exposure to computational biology, including using tools like BLAST for DNA and protein sequence analysis. Following the training, students transition into three weeks of mentor-guided discovery research, working in teams with graduate student mentors and faculty on specific research projects. The workshop culminates in a research presentation at the Summer Departmental Research Symposium, where students articulate their findings and gain valuable experience in scientific communication. This program aims to enhance academic skills, foster critical thinking, collaboration, and a passion for scientific discovery, while also exposing students to potential careers in biology and medicine.
